September Letter from the Head of School

St. Andrews’ Friends and Families, For this month’s Thoughts, I wanted to share with you my first homily that I gave this morning with the students at Morning Prayer. Here’s to standing counter-cultural in our safe-guarding of the dignity of every human being.

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit…Amen

I want to start with a question…”what is your favorite animated film?” What is the film you would watch 2 or 3 times in a row on a family trip? Go ahead…share with your neighbor… One of our family favorites was…is…The Incredibles. We each had a favorite character. Since I had the physique of Mr. Incredible…in his later years…before he got fired from the insurance agency, he was mine. Dashiell Robert Parr was a fan favorite as well.

One of Dash’s lines, in a moment of frustration, is “if everyone is special, no one is…” Now, I don’t know if Dash believed in God or not, he at least didn’t understand God’s love. When God knows us, he loves us. Each and every one of us…and, so, in fact, everyone is special in God’s eyes.

I think Social Media, media in general, and, certainly, many adults are doing a poor job of recognizing this for you. I believe some adults are modeling for you that being loud and angry is the only way to be recognized. In many ways, we know that just to be bullying behavior. That treating others poorly does not matter and that it is not okay to have differences of opinion. And that encountering a different opinion requires an extreme response.

At St. Andrew’s, we know that to simply not be true. At St. Andrew’s, we respect our differing perspectives and understand that if we only surround ourselves with people who think like us, we will have very few people around us. At St. Andrew’s, we honor that each person’s worth is not defined by us, but by God. We know that everyone around us deserves forgiveness and grace because they receive forgiveness and grace from God.

Indeed, we know that beauty, truth, and hope are all around us…especially in your classmates and your teachers and your parents. May you trust in God’s infinite wisdom and stand up for what is good in the world…knowing that he stands right there beside you.

Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
